Finding importers by HS code: a working method

Turn an HS code into a company research list: define the product, check shipment evidence and qualify the recorded parties before outreach.

1. Define the product, destination and period

Start with the product you actually sell: its function, material, model or application. Choose the importing market and a date range before comparing companies. A broad category can contain goods that do not match your offer.

2. Check the HS scope and version

Use the code description and the applicable nomenclature version. Check relevant earlier codes when your period spans a revision; do not merge different categories merely because their numbers look similar. Use our HS reference pages as a starting point and confirm the classification against the full product.

A four-digit category total is context for that category. It is not automatically the market size of a more specific product. Keep the code, period and included markets beside every statistic.

3. Search descriptions as well as codes

Compare code searches with product keywords, spelling variants and specifications. Inspect the source record when a goods description and a displayed code disagree. Confirm how the provider obtained each field before assuming that a code-only result is complete.

4. Resolve the shipment parties

A consignee or shipper is a recorded shipment role. Check the full legal name, address and business activity before treating that entity as the final buyer or manufacturer. Keep forwarders, intermediaries and affiliates identifiable rather than deleting them without review.

5. Review history before ranking prospects

Check bill or record identifiers, date definitions and duplicate handling. Distinguish source rows, shipments and companies. Multiple rows on one day do not establish several orders or recurring purchases.

Compare relevant activity over the same period and scope. Quantity comparisons need matching units; value comparisons need a confirmed source and valuation basis. A supplier change is a research signal, not proof of willingness to buy from you.

6. Choose a justified next action

Assess product fit, the entity’s role and the evidence available. Then research the relevant purchasing function using appropriate business sources. Shipment data does not by itself provide a verified purchasing contact or establish current demand.

PRACTICAL RESEARCH

Apply the method to existing records

US auto parts records

Read the painted-rotor descriptions and displayed shipment parties. Then decide which company and product checks are needed.

PRACTICAL RESEARCH

Prepare a useful sample request

Include your product description, HS code if known, importing country, exporting country if relevant, preferred dates, and the fields you need. If researching a company, add its full name and known address.

Apply the method to an actual data market

Inspect the available company fields in Turkey or Brazil records, then request a sample for your product and period.
